Embrace the Warmth: Abhyanga for Fall and Winter Wellness

Sep 06, 2024

Time flies and Fall and Winter will be here before we know it! And it's good practice to start the transition of routines and rituals before we are deep into the next season.

As the leaves start to turn and the air gets a bit crisper, we know Fall is here, and Winter is just around the corner. With the change in seasons, many of us might start feeling the effects of the Vata dosha – think dry skin, a restless mind, and a general sense of being a bit more scattered than usual. But fear not! There’s a beautiful, ancient practice from Ayurveda that can help us stay grounded, warm, and nourished during these chilly months: Abhyanga.

So, what exactly is Abhyanga?

Simply put, it’s a self-massage with warm oil. But oh, it’s so much more than that! This daily ritual is like giving yourself a big, cozy hug. It’s a way to connect with your body, calm your mind, and show yourself some serious love.

Why Abhyanga?

Let’s dive into some of the amazing benefits of Abhyanga, especially as we navigate the Vata-influenced seasons of Fall and Winter:

🍃 Moisturizes the Skin: The cold, dry air can really do a number on our skin. Abhyanga helps to keep it soft, supple, and hydrated. Think of it as a protective shield against the harsh elements.

🍃 Calms the Nervous System: Vata season can make us feel a bit jittery and anxious. The warm oil and gentle massage work together to soothe the nervous system, promoting a sense of calm and relaxation.

🍃 Improves Circulation: The massage strokes help to stimulate blood flow, which is especially beneficial when we’re feeling cold and stagnant. Better circulation means more warmth and vitality!

🍃 Detoxifies the Body: Abhyanga helps to move lymph, aiding in the removal of toxins from the body. It’s like a mini detox whenever you practice it.

🍃 Enhances Sleep: Struggling with sleep as the days get shorter and nights get longer? This practice can help you unwind and prepare for a restful night’s sleep.

How to Do Abhyanga

Ready to give it a try?

Here’s a simple guide to get you started:

🍃  Choose Your Oil: Sesame oil is a great choice for Vata season because it’s warming and nourishing. You can also use almond oil if you prefer. There are even Vata body oils already made like the ones I buy from Pratima Skin Care.  {Click here, then once on site click 'Shop' then 'Herbal Body OIls' - you'll get some money off a certain order amount with my referral link and if you do purchse, I may receive money off my next order}. Pratima's oils are truly natural and the scents are heavenly!

🍃  Warm the Oil: Place your bottle of oil in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes until it’s comfortably warm. I close my sink's drain, add hot water and let the bottle sit in there for a few minutes - it doesn't take long!

🍃 Set the Mood: Find a warm, quiet space where you won’t be disturbed. Light a candle, play some soothing music – make it a special time for yourself. I love Marina Raye's music!

🍃  Start Massaging: You can begin with your scalp, using gentle circular motions. Then move to your face, neck, and shoulders. Work your way down your arms, torso, and legs, using long strokes on the limbs and circular motions on the joints. Don’t forget your hands and feet! You can also start from your extremities and work toward the torso. See a video showing how by clicking here

🍃  Take Your Time: Spend about 15-20 minutes massaging the oil into your skin. Enjoy the process and really connect with your body.

🍃  Let It Soak In: If you can, let the oil soak in for at least 15 minutes before showering. This allows the oil to penetrate deeply and work its magic.

🍃  Shower: When you’re ready, take a warm shower to rinse off the excess oil. Be gentle with your skin – no need for harsh soaps or scrubbing. And be sure to be careful as your feet may be oily when entering the shower!

And there you have it – a simple, nurturing practice to keep you balanced and warm during the Fall and Winter seasons. Give Abhyanga a try and see how it transforms your daily routine. Here’s to staying cozy, calm, and connected!

I have been using this ancient Ayurvedic therapy of abhyanga since 2002. And it works - but like all else, you actually need to do it!

Stay warm and nourished from the inside out & outside in!
