The Art of Stillness: Embracing Savasana in a Busy World
Jan 18, 2025Did you know that Savasana (Corpse Pose) is considered one of the most challenging yoga poses to master?
If you find it hard to sit still, you’re not alone. In today’s fast-paced world, many of us rarely take the time to simply pause and be.
That’s why Savasana can feel so difficult—it asks us to do something we’re not used to: absolutely nothing.
At the end of a yoga practice, Savasana allows the body and mind to integrate all the benefits of your practice. It’s a moment of stillness, rest, and deep connection. Yet, this simplicity is often what makes it so challenging.
If you struggle to stay present during Savasana, here are a few techniques to help you settle in and truly rest:
-
Follow Your Breath
Observe the natural rhythm of your breath as it flows in and out through your nose. You might notice the gentle rise and fall of your abdomen or the subtle coolness of the inhale and warmth of the exhale. -
Tap Your Thumb to Each Finger
Lightly tap your thumb to each fingertip, one at a time. This simple action keeps your mind engaged just enough to let your body fully relax. -
Count Your Breath
Silently count your breaths: for example, inhale to a count of four (1, 2, 3, 4) and exhale to the same count. This rhythmic focus can calm your mind and draw you inward. -
Feel Your Connection to the Earth
Bring your awareness to the points of contact between your body and the mat. Feel the support of the earth beneath you, grounding and holding you in stillness.
Remember, Savasana is a practice in itself. Be patient and compassionate with yourself as you explore the art of doing less and being more.
